While previous versions of Microsoft Office might work on Mac OSX Lion, the existing version of Microsoft Office 2011 only officially supports Mac OSX Snow Leopard. Recently, Microsoft announced that it is preparing Office 2012, meant specifically to work in OSX Lion, according to a report by Apple Insider.

Office Home and Business 2011 for Mac is compatible with MacBook Air with Lion(OSX 10.7.1). Just do note that there are two major things that upon installation of Office Home and Business 2011 for Mac which may not work on your computer. First thing is the Communicator for Mac. With Lion, Apple dropped support for Rosetta, the emulator that allowed PowerPC programs to run on Intel processor-equipped Macs. Microsoft has remained mum on a timetable for other Office 2011.

Microsoft Office 2012 for Windows is already in beta and is set for release next year. The updated Mac OSX Lion version, once released, could be the first Microsoft Office version to be available on the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store first came out in January 2011 and was made available to Snow Leopard users.
Adding support for Mac OSX Lion could mean the addition of features such as Auto Save and Versions to popular Microsoft applications Word, Powerpoint, and Excel.
